  1. dissolved carbonate hardness (it's a 'k' instead of a 'c' cause it's taken from german, where it's spelled with a 'k')

you test for it with a simple test kit..

take a sample of water, add an indicator, and drop in reagent one drop at a time until and endpoint is reached (usually indicated by a color change)

API makes one for cheap but if you can find them Elos makes a GREAT test kit of all kinds

Kent Superbuffer-dKH is a specially formulated pH buffer and alkalinity or carbonate hardness (KH) builder, designed to adjust the pH of saltwater aquariums to the range of 8.0 to 8.3 and build the KH. Superbuffer-dKH is the finest buffer available for either fish only or reef type marine aquariums and is designed to mix clear with little or no cloudiness or precipitation. Will not flake on your corals as other competing products can! Compatible with and designed for use with Kalkwasser Mix, Concentrated Liquid Calcium, or Turbo-Calcium by Kent Marine.

    Directions:

Dissolve one teaspoon of Superbuffer-dKH in a glass of fresh water. Add directly to tank or sump for each 20-30 gallons (80 liters) of tank capacity each day until the desired pH and alkalinity (carbonate hardness or KH) are reached. Wait 1 hour to remeasure alkalinity, but wait 24 hours for pH to stabilize, before re-measuring (full pH increase and stabilization may take up to 48 hours!). This product is designed for reefs and may be used in fish only marine systems also.

    Considerations for use:

A pH of 8.0 to 8.3 and an alkalinity of 2.9 to 4.0 meq/L (8 to 11 dKH) is recommended, with 3.4 meq/L (9.5 dKH) being optimum. (Fish only tanks should maintain 3.5 to 4.5 meq/L (or 10 to 12 dKH). After target pH and alkalinity are reached, use at 2 week intervals to maintain values. Use Kent Marine Essential Elements weekly to provide proper trace minerals. Kent Marine Zoe added to food will supply needed vitamins. In reef systems, use Kent Kalkwasser Mix, Concentrated Liquid Calcium, or Turbo-Calcium to provide calcium and Strontium and Molybdenum Supplement or Turbo-Strontium to provide necessary strontium for the invertebrates.

    Contents:

carbonate, bicarbonate and borate salts of sodium, magnesium, and potassium.
