Wait List vs. Tatkal train reservation?

Question

I am waitlisted on Tuticorin express for a journey from SBC (Bangalore) to KNY (Kodai Roads) this Saturday.

Since current W/L status is 32, can I ensure the journey by cancelling this ticket and paying the Tatkal premium when the Tatkal advance reservation window opens for internet booking (I understand 5 days prior to journey). How does this work? How does one gauge the changes of converting a W/L reservation to an RAC or confirmed reservation?

With a wait listed ticket you are not allowed to board the train.

Chance of conversion to RAC depends on number of cancellations.

With a tatkal ticket you can be sure of making the journey.
