Geneaology has nothing to do with lamps or wishes. It has to do with GENES (hence GENEaology!)

The genes that produce YOU came from your parents; theirs came from THEIR parents, and so forth.

Hence, genealogy is the ancestors of any given individual.

Genealogy is the study (hence, the -ology ending) of one's ancestors, or  the history of families from generation to generation. You can trace not only family members, but also the origin of your family name, etc.

When you rub the lamp and get 3 wishes (NOT), you are thinking of GENIES, as in Aladdin--a Middle Eastern fairy tale.
