I'm a new waitress, and I have difficulty handling tables of 5 or more. What are some tips on handling large tables?

  1. I love large parties, and you should, too.  It's more potential money in your pocket.  When you approach the table, it's your time to shine.  Flaunt your strengths and remember to be courteous and confident.  Be sure to take control and speak loud enough for everyone to hear; this way things will get done quicker.  Of course, you will get better with practice.

    I like to entertain the table.  If I can get them laughing, then they are less likely to be upset if something goes wrong.  It also helps me make beaucoup bucks on those large parties.

  2. Focus on your table for five whole minutes at a time. The biggest problem waitresses run into with big tables is that they spend so much time trying to make them happy that they ignore their other tables, ruining their tips altogether.

    Every other five minutes, check on your larger table. Refill drinks, bus dirty dishes, bring condiments, etc. Then leave the table alone completely for five minutes. Tend to your other tables, and then return when you're done. It sounds complicated, especially if you're super busy, but it works. Also, learn how to multi-task. You can save alot of time when you learn how to manage your time efficiently.

  3. Be very diligent to keep the customers straight.  start at your direct left...that person is #1, write there order down first,  then work your way clockwise.  when you deliver the food you will be able to tell who has what by the way they are seated. If you are very busy you can sometimes leave a pitcher of water on the table so guests will always have it available.  Of course you will have to make sure it's ok with the establishment you work at.
