Why don't restaurants just include the cost of labor in the price of the product, like other businesses?

  1. because that would be consider an unnecessary raise. the money that is left after all of the employees get paid goes to the resteraunt chain if tips were included in the bill then there would be very little left to go to the chain

  2. because then you would get crappy service all the time, why work for it if you've already got it?

  3. The businesses save money.  The waiter gets paid more.  The customer thinks he gets better service. In most situations though, he just pays more for his meal.  I have traveled to lots of countries where you don't tip, and the service was just as good or better than in the States.

  4. I agree with you; you don't tip at McDonald's and their employees make over $3 an hour.  I hate to add the tip into the cost of my meal. If they don't have a good wait staff I don't go back. Why should I have to pay for their employees wages.

  5. I don't think that would be appropriate.  Waiting on tables is not like plumbing or installing carpets etc.  There really isn't a way to generalize.  I would not get  carpet installer if they weren't licensed. Waiting on tables is not in that category.

  6. who knows, I think if you want to tip you then you should. but what if you get a bad waiter and you dont want to leave them a tip? I think they should leave it up to the people.
