  1. It all depends on the restaurant.  Ask the person waiting on you, or the maitre d'.

  2. It varies from place to place.

  3. In most cases no.  However in smaller places this might be practiced.

  4. It depends mostly on the establishment and their policies. No it is not a law that they must split tips.

In addition, some restaurants have servers split their tips with a trainee who also worked the table. Not all of them do this either.

The only people I can think of that a waitress often (not always) has to share their tips with are the bus boys who bus their particular tables, and I think it is a percentage.

Things have changed so much since I was in the restaurant industry, but I know it is not a law and it does depend on where you are applying/working.

  5. nah, just the bus people at finer restaurants. Why, do you have some tips you want to share with me?

  6. It really depends on the restaurant policy.  I think you're referring to pooling - where all the tips are collected and equally divided amongst all the servers on the floor that shift.

But besides that - servers in most, if not all restaurants have to "tip out" other staff at the restaurant (ie bussers, bar, foodrunners)  and these tip out figures are based on sales.  So if a server gets stiffed on a tip - he/she will still have to give tipouts (usually 2 ~6% off total sales).

  7. well where i live there is a couple of resturants who have servers split their tips with each other but this usually onlt goes on in family owned places i know caused i worked at one but quit and got a job where i didnt have to split my tips

  8. It depends on the restaurant policies,  some of the chain restaurants require you to give a percentage of your tips to the bartender, hostess and busboys. Some restaurants do pool their tips and then split them,  some places just ask you to tip busboys or bartender.  If you really want to know ask your server what is their  policy regarding tips.

  9. All depends on the restaurant and its policy.  If it's a small restaurant where the waiter does everything then probably not.  But in most restaurant chains or larger or pricer restaurant, they have waiters that takes the order then they have food servers who brings you the food.  The waiter will have to tip out to them and given them a certain amount depending on how much tip was made that day.  They may have to tip out to the bartender and the busboy too.  Some small independent restaurant may not make enough tip for the wait staff and so the owner may keep all the tip and pay the staff a certain amount for the shift.
