Hello, I am from Montreal, Quebec. I have been a waitress for 3 years now, and am thinkling of moving to Toronto for a year or two. Eventually, I plan on coming back to Montreal of course:) I would like to know what the job market is like for waitresses in Toronto. Where are the restaurants to make pretty good $$? I heard that people do not tip very well in Toronto. Is this true? A friend of mine said he went to one restaurant and he tipped the waitress 15-20%, and the waitress knew right away that he was not from there!! What is the standard tipping percentage in Toronto in restaurants/bars? In Montreal, it is 15%. Sometimes people leave less, and sometimes more. I would like to know if going to Toronto will be worth it...Any feeback from people who know Toronto or who have waited tables there would be greatly appreciated!! Also, if there are any restaurants in particular that are fun and good to work at, let me know!

  1. I don't know about tiping habits in Quedec however my general rule of thumb is 15% if service is good and up to 20% if everything is excellent. I may leave less if I feel the service is below what it should be.  Your might want to try Brix Napa Valley wine bar and grille or Nava both are in Richmond Hill and great places to work at to make good money. Owned by Mike and Teresa Wilson, mention my name John Clarke

  2. 0 to 15 % depending on the service.

  3. When in Toronto you really want to find a job in the entertainment district.     There are plenty of places, and it is highly touristy and in the theater district so you are pretty much guaranteed decent tips and a steady crowd.  There is a range from bars to 5 start dining depending upon what you are looking for.

Generally you will make anywhere from 0%-20% in tips depending.   Some people are just cheap b******s.

If you don't already have it, it never hurts to get your smart serve, It makes you a little more marketable.   it costs about $40 and the course can be completed online.

    Good luck.

  4. Being a former chef and having worked in Toronto on and off for 12 years, I worked mainly in Hotels, Restaurants and Private clubs.

It all depends on the place and the clientele, the area of the place, and the cuisine, in a fine dining place your going to get a reasonable/good tip, but a fast food/casual dining place the people expect less so they tip less. I would try to get into a hotel dining room or banquets, they make more as most are unionized, even the larger banquet halls, you can work 2 places and make more.

Before travelling here, I would check the 2 newspapers and have an idea depending on where your living what places are available, and there are a few agencies in the city that handle all wait staff positions, there might be a place to start.

  5. I was a waitress for over 15 years...proper tips are between 15% & 20% if you do an exceptional job then it should be more like 30%
