  1. pulling the rope to your hips and straightening your legs wont get the job done. you need to be in a compact squated position doing a stomach crunch as the boat moves. you need to be patient and not try to stand up or you will push the board forward and you will fall backward. forget everything and let the instructor teach you. if you cant get up then, then he should refund your money!

  2. bend your knees with the toe edge of your board facing up, like you're sitting in a chair, when the boat starts to move straighten your legs and let the boat pull you up.  It's frustrating at first but once you get it once you'll pretty much always get it, it's just learning that first time exactly what you need to do with your body.  Have confidence hold the rope tight at your hips, you'll get it.
