Wakefield Trinity Wildcats confirm dismissal of Gregory Johnson – Rugby League
On Wednesday, October 5, the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats confirmed the release of winger Gregory Johnson after he has been proven guilty of sexual assault and grievous bodily harm by Bradford Crown Court, for which he will serve a term of two years in jail.
The incident took place in February, at a Huddersfield bar, while the prop was still playing for Huddersfield Giants. Soon after that the Giants sacked the winger, he was taken on board by the Wildcats.
However, his term at Wakefield was also very short. The prop has been made to sign off from the Wildcats, with only eleven Super League appearances to his credit this year.
Wakefield released a statement confirming the termination of the winger with immediate effect, in lieu of the Court’s final verdict against him.
The statement from Wildcats said, “Johnson, who joined the club in April until the end of the 2011 season, has been immediately dismissed by the club following being found guilty of the incident which took place in February 2011, before he joined the Wildcats.
No further comment will be made regarding this matter.”
Johnson will serve two years behind bars as his penalty for the crime, which eliminates him from rugby for at least until the end of that period. He has also been ordered to enroll in the s*x offenders’ register for seven years.
It has been revealed that the player has been sentenced for sexually assaulting a complete stranger at bar. The player also threw a heavy glass tumbler at the women’s face which has scared her face permanently. She was severely bruised and had to get her
eyelid and nose stitched up. The victim had her wedding lined up just a few weeks after the incident took place.
However, during the hearing, Johnson’s Barrister, Phillip Tully, said that the player is embarrassed and regretful of his unacceptable behavior.
While talking about the player’s repentance for his unethical and extremely objectionable act, Tully went on and said that the player was not sober enough at that time but if he had the power of turning back the clock, he would wish to undo it all.
