Wales’ Jamie Jones books Crucible spot after beating Ricky Walden in qualifiers – Snooker News
Qualifying session of the 2012 World Snooker Championship at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield has ended featuring 16 potters who have joined the World Top 16 in the opening round of the tournament. Wales’ Jamie Jones is also one of the qualifiers who
have made their way into the televised stages. The Welshman is quite happy after winning a Crucible spot and is aiming for a good performance in the event.
Jones was up against the former Shanghai Masters winner England’s Ricky Walden in the final qualifying match and easily defeated him by the score line of 10-2. Jones’ run in the qualifying session was not that hard as he just had to win two matches to book
his place in the first round. He ousted Andy Hicks in his first qualifier by a close score line of 10-9 to set up Walden clash.
The 24-year-old will be facing the former World Snooker Champion from England, Shaun Murphy in the initial round. Jones is looking forward for this match and has high hopes with his form. Despite the fact that his World Championship opponent is quite experienced
and is in good form, Jones believes he can trouble his opponent.
Speaking to World Snooker after surging into the Championship, Jones said, “It hasn't sunk in yet that I'm going to the Crucible, it's crazy. I went there as a spectator about ten years ago and I was barely even watching the matches, I was just dreaming
of playing there.”
He added, “I had a lot of momentum coming here because I did well in the PTC Grand Finals. I beat John Higgins there which helped me a lot because it was a big crowd and I had never experienced that before. I felt a lot more at home in front of the crowd
today, I was able to settle down and play well.”
Jones wanted to face the former three-time World Snooker Champion, Ronnie O’Sullivan in the mega event but the draw placed him against Murphy, who is the arch rival of O’Sullivan. It will be interesting to see how Jones manages to carry his winning momentum
forward in the exciting tournament.
