Wales’ Jamie Jones overpowers Shaun Murphy in Round 1: 2012 World Snooker Championship
Spectators present at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield witnessed a tussling encounter between the Welshman Jamie Jones and the former World Snooker Championship winner, England’s Shaun Murphy in the opening round of the 2012 World Snooker Championship.
The first round clash between Murphy and Jones finished in the Welshman’s favour as he took down his opponent by the score line of 10-8.
Jones totally unsettled his opponent in the final session of the game and was able to hit the jackpot with his outstanding performance at the baize.
Snooker fans were expecting Murphy to emerge as victorious but luck was in Jones’ favour as he swept the table in the final session to win the game and book his place in the second round of the Championship.
Meanwhile, Jones was quite happy with his success because he grabbed the victory out of an intense situation where the Magician was almost dominating him. However, Jones said that he did not feel any pressure and continued his sound potting which finally
paid off for him.
While speaking to the local media, Jones said, “I've never felt any pressure like it in my life. I've never known an occasion like it. The red went in, I jumped up and almost hit the ceiling, and gave it the fist. Then I potted the brown and went in-off,
and I thought, 'Oh my god, there can't be another twist'.”
The Welshman added, “Then I had a chance on a red and as soon as I potted that and made sure of the blue I knew it was over then. It wasn't planned. It wasn't like, 'If I pot this I'm going to go mental'. When it went in, emotion came over me.”
Murphy’s performance in the recent snooker season has been outstanding as he was able to maintain his form and rankings throughout the season. Nevertheless, the defeat of the former Champ is one of the biggest upsets of the event because he was one of the
top contenders to take the world title.
The Englishman had his eyes on the ultimate glory because he had been working really hard to achieve his goal but things did not go according to his hopes. It will be exciting to see how Jones manages to carry some of his winning momentum forward in the
Championship.
