Wales - The BIG COUNTRY or is it?

No offense but I think as far as stupid statements in holiday adverts are concerned this is one of them. I know Wales looks big because frankly no one is there. Then again what do i know? I was stupid enough to think Russia, Canada, USA, China, Brazil were the BIG COUNTRIES. Seems I have a lot to learn Rodney!

  1. I'm glad it's not TOO big...that'll make it easier to see more of when I'm there in the Fall. ☺

  2. there is something that my mum used to say to me when i was little that your question made me remember - "if you ironed all the hills and mountains in Wales, it would be bigger than England" which in the grand scheme of things is still very small.

so even if you managed to find a giant iron, wales would still be very small.

  3. its c**p

  4. Wales- The Boring Country, i would say.

  5. Sir, the advertising term 'Big Country' does not refer to geographical size, population, military might or GDP.

It is simply a slogan to attract tourists. This can apply to any country.

As for Wales, this is a very small country/principality but it has a lot to offer in a 'small area'.  It has great and varied scenery, world class holiday resorts, many heritage sites and guaranteed welcome. The advantage of the country's small size is that you can visit many places without too many long and tiring journeys through vast expanses of nothingness! I am not Welsh but I like Wales - apart from the drunks. Apparently, the incidence of teenage drunkenness in Wales is one of the highest in Europe. They compete well in this respect with large countries like Russia!

This is the essence of the self-deprecating joke - that Wales is a small country with a great deal to offer. I had to explain this, I feel, from your question. I am sure, however, that you knew the answer and its implications all along!

As for 'no one is there', you have to be joking! Night life in the big cities like Cardiff is as good as anywhere.

By the way, Antarctica is big. Excluding the scientific bases, have you considered going there for an extended visit? Plenty of time and space for contemplation and clearing your mind.

  6. it's not The Big Country it's The Big CUNTry, make sense now?

  7. A bit like a person with a "big heart" the meaning isn't literal. I think they are saying that they have a country that is a bit special. And coming from an Englishman, they would be right.
