Wales and Celtic Manor receive much needed financial boost after a successful Ryder Cup in 2010
The 2010 Ryder Cup seems to have breathed a new life in the otherwise redundant Celtic Manor Resort in Wales, as the club’s financial earnings observed a boost with no fewer than 40 new tours held under their annual events on the resort. Last year’s Ryder
Cup was one of the most successful events held in the event’s history, where the European Team went over to post a historic win under the captaincy of Colin Montgomerie.
It is not just the Celtic Manor which received the returns of the successful event. Wales, on the whole has experienced an unprecedented upsurge in tourists that have flocked the countryside since October, last year. Most of the tourists who visited, especially
signed up for a round at the revered resort in an attempt to experience the brilliance of the course.
A Visit Wales spokesman, the government subsidiary which looks over tourism in Wales said, “Interest in Wales has not subsided since the Ryder Cup, there is an increased awareness of Wales as a golf tourism destination.”
According to statistics showed by Visit Wales, the Welsh economy received a huge strength of tourists that flocked the countryside right after the event was held and 21 percent of the total tourists so far, registered to play golf on the resort. The total
financial returns swelled up to £42m since then.
Matthew Evans, leader of Newport council, was particularly impressed by the turnout of the visitors to the country in the time of a severe economic crunch all across Europe and America. He said, “It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for Newport to host
the Ryder Cup and I would host the tournament again tomorrow if we had the chance. Many local businesses gained directly as a result of the event although we always recognized it was not going to bring financial rewards for everyone, especially in view of
the economic climate.”
Also under the auspices of Ryder Cup Legacy Fund, 40 percent more boys under 18, and 60 percent more girls have registered as permanent members ensuring a bright future of the sport in the coming decades. The funds spokeswoman officer, Ellen Jones, said
that the clubs across the country have suffered a membership decline of almost 2.5 percent but added that clubs who opted to merge with the fund, have done better than their competitors.
The Ryder Cup will return in the year 2012 at the scenic Medinah Country Club in Illinois. Davis Love III will be leading the American team at the event while the European Team will be led by distinguished Spaniard, Jose Maria Olazabal. The event marks the
historic rivalry between the two giants of the sport and is one of the most celebrated events on both sides of the Atlantic.
