Wales ask Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs to coach Welsh national side
Welsh Football Association is expected to talk to Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs this week over a possible place in their coaching scene. Current manager, John Toshack is expected to resign from the manager post this week but may well stay back atleast for the next month double qualifying matches. The team is to play Bulgaria and Switzerland next month for the Euro 2012 qualifying and leaving the national side at such a time would be very unprofessional.
According to Sportsmail, John Toshack has suggested that they bring in Ryan Giggs as his possible successor and the Wales Football Association now looks to lure the legendary winger away from Old Trafford as their first team boss. It would be highly unlikely for the midfielder to manage the side till his own career is over with Manchester United and is expected to advised so by manager Sir Alex Ferguson as well. The Football Association of Wales (FAW), however, would still want to be involved at some level.
One option which surfaced and is highly likely to be liked by both the player and his club would be that Giggs should be the caretaker manager for the national side for atleast the remainder of this international season. Giggs would only be involved with Wales coming matches for Euro 2012 and would be working on the strategy, player involvement and tactics. Giggs, however, wouldn’t be brought up with responsibility of picking players and preparing squad lists.
Such an array would be best for the former Welsh captain and is highly unlikely to face any resistance from his club. This would be Giggs’s 18th season with the Manchester United and the player still looks to continue playing at the age of 36. Giggs featured for his national side back in May 2007, where he earned 64 caps in his 16 years for the national side. The player has already announced his international retirement from the International team, but vowed to return to duty in an emergency.
The coaching job, however, suits him more. The player has already taken several summer courses on coaching and would love to take over the reigns of the national side when there are a lot of young players in the squad. Wales would be taking on England in March and it is expected to be part of the managing side at Wales by then. It was seen that last night, the FAW were still unsure of who to play where and still have no replacements for the departing Toshack. The manager took over the post six years ago but has come under heavy fire in recent years. Brian Flynn, Wales Youth squad boss, is expected to take over, with Ryan Giggs as the strategical and tactical assistant of the team. the FAW has also received constant support for former Welsh International Chris Coleman. Also, Dean Saunders, who is Wrexham manager is also a likely candidate. Newly appointed Sheffield United boss, Gary Speed, is also considered a hopeful candidate.
Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs is one of the decorated players of the Premier league. The player has won more Premier league medals than anyone, when he took his tally to an unprecedented 11. Giggs also has the record of scoring in every premier league season since its start in 1992. A managerial post for such a player would be ideal once he retires from Football, but taking over two very opposite position has a chance of hampering his performance with Manchester United. Giggs still wants to add more trophies to his tally and aims to be a team player rather than an individual one.
