Wales’ skipper Matthew Rees given 10-week rest period after surgery - Rugby News
Wales skipper Matthew Rees, who was ruled out of Rugby World Cup 2011 after an injury to his neck, has been suggested 10 weeks rest after undergoing an operation to his neck. Scarlet coach, Nigel Davies, told the media about the latest development regarding
Rees’ injury and said that operation was successful and he has been asked to take a 10 week rest by the doctors. Rees was ruled out from the Welsh RWC squad after he failed to prove his fitness to the selectors.
Mathew Rees was expected to be included in Wales’ final squad even without playing any warm-up game and he took many pain killer injections in this regard but in the end all was in vain. Wales head Coach Warren Gatland revealed his final crew for RWC 2011
and nominated Sam Warburton as a new skipper of his side.
The latest surgery means nothing to the Welsh side as his Rugby World Cup hopes were already over. However, Scarlet the local club he plays for, has been deprived of his services for the suggested period.
Scarlet head coach Nigel Davies told the media about his surgery and said that, “The operation went very well. Matthew is very good and we are hoping he will be available within eight to 10 weeks.”
The Scarlet side is in real crisis after the time taking injury of Mathew Rees as another player Ken Owens is also out of action due to his selection in Welsh Rugby World Cup squad.
Matthew Rees has been playing for Scarlet since 2004 and has played 135 matches for club. The 30-year-old hooker is currently the most capped player for the club with huge experience under his belt. He is also the captain of the Scarlet side since a comprehensive
time. The veteran player has remained highly successful at his position and was boosted as the skipper of Wales in 2010.
He has also the prestige to represent British and Irish Lions for three years.
