Wales star Shane Williams may quit after Rugby World Cup 2011
Wales star Shane Williams has expressed his desire to retire from international Rugby after the World Cup in 2011.
Williams made this decision after he was dropped from the side for last match of the ongoing Six Nations 2011 against France due to a knee injury.
Whole of the team management is trying to convince Williams to withdraw his decision. He has played 79 matches for Wales including 25 matches of Six Nations Championship. He has scored 53 tries in his career for his national side.
The Welsh attack coach Rob Howley has been trying to convince him to stay with the team as he is playing reasonably well. The coach said that he is in contact with Williams and he hopes that he will be able to convince him.
The coach further said, “He has got the World Cup and the summer games coming up, and from all the physical data we are getting from him in training - his speed, the first five and 10 meters time - he is one of our quickest backs, if not the quickest.”
Rob argued that his attachment with the team is very important as he has proved during the last few months. He added that since his come back from shoulder injury he has really improved the performance of the youngsters in the side.
He said the team will miss him to a great extent if he does not change his mind. He said, “He has had a huge influence on youngsters like George North, Morgan Stoddart and Leigh Halfpenny, to name but three. His attitude and professionalism have been spot-on.
The boys practice as wingers and Shane has been influential in training and playing.”
Wales are expected to announce their side for the last clash of the Six Nations against France. They have called back the experienced Adam Jones into the squad who has not played any of the previous matches due to an elbow injury. However, the main concern
for the Welsh team is Williams’ possible retirement after the Rugby World Cup.
