Walker agrees to new Essex deal
Popular Essex batsman Matt Walker has signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him in the county next season.
The veteran middle order player joined Essex from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kent-c802 in 2009 and quickly became one of the most popular players at Essex among the fans, fellow players and coaches.
He said, "It is a real honour to have signed for an additional year. I have loved my two years so far with Essex and have enjoyed working with both the lads in the dressing room and everyone else involved in the club."
This will be a welcome piece of news for all Essex fans because the county is to play four-day cricket in the second division of the county championship next season.
Experience is key
Relegation in any form of sport and at any level is never nice, and Walker will be looked to by a number of younger players at the club. This is because Walker has a great deal of experience and can help the younger players cope with the negative feelings that often develop after relegation.
Walker is good enough to hold down a place in the Essex middle order for next season. On the other hand, there is no guarantee that Ravi Bopara will be in the county all season because he is likely to be asked to go off on England duty. This means there will be extra pressure on other players, and Walker has been around long enough to cope. Walker will have to hold together the middle order of the team in all forms of the game. Head coach Paul Grayson added, "We are delighted that Matt has agreed to extend his contract for next year, he has probably been one of the most consistent performers this season in all forms of cricket."
