Question:

Walkie Talkie FRS/GMRS... help... what license?

I recently bought a FRS/GMRS 2 way walkie talkie in the US. This is my first walkie talkie purchase. We just bought it to communicate between cars on a family road trip. I have no idea what license the small print is referring to. I just need the walkie talkie to communicate to a car that will not even be a mile a head of mine for a family roadtrip we are planning to take.

Can someone kindly explain what needs to be done.

  1. FRS = license free, GMRS requires a FCC license, $75.00 for 5 years.

    FRS and GMRS share the same portable radio... so you need to be aware of what channels are FRS and free and what are GMRS and require a license.

    GMRS licensed users are upset that the FCC allowed this to happen so they are always on the lookout for illegal users.

    FRS = Family Radio Service

    GRMS = General Radio Mobile Service.

    If the box did not contain a license aplication, you can get on from www.fcc.gov or call 1-888-call-fcc

  2. You require a GMRS license for the GMRS frequencies.  This license is now $85.

    You may use the FRS only channels without a license.  These are 8-14 on your radios.
