Question:

Walkie Talkie?

I need a pair of walkie talkies that has a range of 2 miles in the city (not on top of mountains or on flat land). There are a lot of trees in the area, but not too many tall buildings. Are there any walkie talkies that will go that far?

  1. GMRS with a repeater would work, but most are private, and finding equipment set up for the proper 'split' is not cheap or easy. Yep..Use a cell phone.

  2. ALL walkie talkies are limited in power by FCC rules.

Most run at the max allowed power.

quality of modulation, components, quieting, and engineering will determine how intelligible the signal is at 2 miles - not the power.

My choice is Motorola - try a T9500R about $60/pair.

  3. yes, you need the aid of a repeater. GMRS is an open service that allows repeater use and would give you the required coverage - provided there is a GMRS repeater in your area. If there is not, you can put one there.

A license is required from the FCC. The license costs $75.00 for 5 years.

You can also get what is called an Itinerant Business license, for this you should contact a local 2-way shop, and NOT Radio sHack as they have no clue.

In reality, a cell phone may be the cheapest way to communicate.
