Question:

Walking into Mexico, then renting a car! Where can I rent a car?

I am driving to the border outside of San Diego, and then we are going to walk across into Tijuana. I wanted to rent a car once there and then drive south a bit, maybe around Ensenada or a bit more south. Heading there in a couple days, so this is a bit urgent!

What is the rental car situation like on the other side of the border?? Are there only big rental car places like Budget and Avis? Are there smaller little lots with VW Bugs or some BS like that to rent around there? I dont want to go over there and rent some dumb Taurus or something. Any advice on renting a car on the other side?

Anything else I should know about renting a car in Mexico?? Thanks!!!

  1. Easiest place to rent a car would be at the Tijuana airport. Here's the airport link with car-rental info:

Walk across and take a taxi to the airport. Some of the agencies might also have offices closer to the border, like at the Camino Real hotel, just ask them when you set up your reservation. But I think the airport is the easiest option.

Renting a car is pretty much the same as in the States. I doubt any of the main agencies would rent the bochos (VW Bugs). Usually, an economy car there is a Tsuru. But you could also go upscale and get an SUV.

  2. I don't know if this is your first time crossing the border, but Tijuana has everything. Its a modern city of a third world country.

Here is a list of the car rentals (Budget, Hertz, Avis....) you can find in the city with phone numbers and address.  Also you can find a lot of information on things to do and eat.

    Hope it helps.

  3. Renting a car in Mexico is pretty much like renting a car in Chicago. I can't understand why you would go to the expense of renting a car for such a short trip when you could just hop on a bus.Taking a taxi both ways might even be less expensive than renting a car.Have a safe trip however you go.
