What's better for losing weight?

If you are doing distance, and not time, what is better, jogging or walking? To me, walking and jogging 3 miles are the same thing. Reason is, most people tell you to work out by time. So if you jog 3 miles, you will finish in say, 25 minutes. If you walk 3 miles, you will finish in say, 60 minutes (of course these are estimates). So the person who jogged will be chilling for 35 minutes while the person who walked is still working out.

  1. Walking is completely different from running. Your body gets used to walking, so you can walk for 2 hours and you won't really feel a difference.

But your body never gets that used to running. Your body completely changes after running. You build muscle and you sweat and your heart beats faster while running.

Walking cannot produce the same results, but it's better than being a couch potato.

  2. WALKING AND JOGGING 3 MILES IS NOT THE SAME THING!!!!Runing is wayyyy better!!!!youll get tired faster therefore you keep pushing yourself!!!

  3. You are correct, 3 miles running is almost the same as 3 miles walking.

You burn more calories running, but you get through sooner so you exercise for less time, in the end it is the same for calorie burning.

  4. If you training goal is to burn fat then brisk walking is best for most people.  You want to keep your heart rate at about 60-70% of your max heart hate.  This is found (roughly) by taking 220 - your age.  So, if you are 20, your max HR is 200 and you should be targeting 120 - 140 as your heart rate.

Running does burn more calories but if your heart rate is above 70% of your max, you're not burning fat, just carbs really.

Tip: check your heart rate by watching 6 seconds go by on your watch while counting heart beats.  Add a 0 to the number you counted for your heart rate.
