I want to walk from the West Midlands to Stockport as a sponsored walk, to raise money to help Alzheimers Disease sufferers. What is the best way to find the best route to take. Also, any tips on long walks gratefully recieved. Thanks.

  1. I don't have any specific information I'm afraid, but it might be a good idea to follow the National Cycle Routes. Try this link to Sustrans: http://www.sustrans.org.uk/default.asp?s... which will allow you to click on the little map thing and find a cycle route, or you can plan a route by inputting your destination I think.

I realise you are walking not cycling but in my experience cycle routes are usually good for pedestrians as well as cyclists.

Also, the West Midlands is canal country, so you could go up the canal. The Trent & Mersey Canal runs up from the West Midlands through Stoke-on-Trent. Off the top of my head - you would need to plan this more thoroughly as I have never done it - you could go up the canal as far as Stoke-on-Trent then switch to the cycle route that heads out to Congleton. There would surely be a signposted route out that way.

Obviously don't take everything I've said as gospel but it might be a start for you.

Route 5 goes through Stoke-on-Trent and up into Cheshire - I believe it eventually goes to Chester. Route 70 is in Cheshire but I'm not sure where it starts, ends, or where it goes to in the county.
