I'm going to be taking a trip to Mexico soon. I am from Montana, and will be taking the Greyhound from here to Eagle Pass, Texas. After that my plan was to walk to Piedras Negras, Mexico. I will be in Piedras for about a week and will be continuing my journey on foot around Mexico. I am aware of the preperations (lots of water, ect..), but I was wondering if you have ever done this, or have known anyone that has walked around Mexico. I'm going to be avoiding all big cities as much as possible, and plan to spend some time in the desert around farms and stuff. I will have a pretty nice backpack http://www.kelty.com/kelty/products.php?type=4&cat=all&id=412 , camelback (for people that dont know what that is, its a small backpack that fits above a normal backpack and it holds water. Anyways, Im just curious to know what people think about this trip.

One thing I ask is that people dont recommend hotels. I hear that a lot, but I do not desire to stay in hotels.thisisntavacationitsexplorati

  1. Suerte   young man .  I admire your courage.

One thing about your ambitions puzzles me.

Why would you want to walk (Forest) when you can bus it?

  2. You are crazy.

I don´t think it is safe to walk.  The north part of Mexico is very unsafe.

    I would NEVER do it.

I love traveling all over Mexico (by car) and staying at the best hotels.  I do this twice a year.

I know the whole country and I stay at the best hotels of Mexico.

Best hotels in the world you can find them in Mexico.   I stay twice a year at Camino Real Oaxaca:

and also at Quinta Real in Zacatecas

My respects to you.  Take care and good luck.

    (All at your own risk)

  3. You got balls.......

Carry a gun. Bring little trinkets for the farm children. maybe some school books in spanish.

    I think your nuts.

  4. If you just stay in small towns, you'll get to see how great the Mexican people are.  It seems that in the tourist areas, many Mexicans are con artists.  But in the smaller towns, you'll see the large hearts of the common people.  Get used to people coming by to stare at the crazy gringo.

Please keep a diary, and after the adventure write a book or create a website telling about your experiences.  I, for one, would like to read it.

I hope your Spanish is good.  But I've driven through 18 of the 31 states with just enough Spanish to get a room, order a meal and ask directions.
