Question:

Wall Painting Problems

I have recently moved into a new flat where the walls are plasterboard and have been painted white. I want to repaint but the surface seems to suck the new paint as soon as it is applied. Is there a preparation that can be applied to the walls to stop this.

  1. get some PVA adhesive and dilute it 10 parts water 1 part PVA and roller it on. It will sort it

  2. 2 coats of vynal matt emulsion will do the trick.

    p.s. 24 years as a painter

  3. you need to get some wall primer, should do the trick.

  4. You can buy primer designed for painting new drywall.  That should do the the trick.  I ran into the same thing with a new house, the problem is that the builder used a really crappy paint that didn't do anything to seal the drywall.  If you have the primer tinted to match the color of the paint you'll be using, then you might be able use only one coat of paint along with the primer.

  5. Don't put PVA on walls for painting.  As said above - apply two coats of vinyl matt emulsion.  A decent one like Dulux.

  6. I have to agree with TAF....I too am a decorator and will not use cheaper paints..They are false economy..Buy a good quality paint as suggested by others..Crown or Dulux...You will need to do two coats but the means justifies the end ..
