Wallabies captain James Horwill admits his side’s below par performance against Ireland – Rugby news
Australian National Rugby Union team’s captain, James Horwill has admitted that his side performance was below par in their 15 – 6 defeat at the hands of Ireland.
Wallabies captain Horwill made the comments at the end of their Pool C encounter against the Ireland at Eden Park, Auckland on Saturday, September 17, 2011.
Speaking on the occasion, Horwill said, “We weren't good enough. We didn't given enough clean platform for our backs and they did well to spoil us and they played well and they deserved their win.”
The results are nothing less than an upset, as an underperforming Irish side has delivered a shocking defeat to one of the 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC) favourites. The win has put the Ireland on the top of the Pool C with 8 points, coming from their two matches
in the tournament so far.
After their Saturday’s defeat, the 2011 Tri Nations champions Wallabies, find themselves to be competing against the defending champions Springboks in the quarterfinals and 2011 RWC hosts, All Blacks in the semi-finals of the tournament.
Wallabies follow them with their 5 points courtesy of their bonus point victory of the Azzurri’s in their opening 2011 RWC encounter last weekend.
The score of the both teams was levelled at the half time mark at 6 – all. However, Irish strong second half performance has helped them to achieve the major upset. The results of the match have impact that is more lasting on tournament.
Horwill admitted that the Irish controlled the game very well, particularly in the second half of the game. He added that Irish has denied them from creating any sort of the momentum, which eventually cost them the game.
Additionally, Wallabies match preparations suffered a last minute below as their first choice full back David Pocock was ruled out the game with a back injury.
Australia is still to play two more games in the 2011 RWC tournament, against the USA Eagles and Russia respectively.
