Wallabies crush All Blacks in final of Tri-Nations Cup to lift trophy after a decade - Rugby News
The rampant Wallabies thumped the Number One ranked All Blacks 25-20 in the final of the Tri Nations Cup 2011, on August 27 in Brisbane.
The Wallabies looked strong in the first-half and scored 10 unanswered points over the All Blacks. The Australian side was well ahead of the New Zealanders at the end of the first-half with a splendid total of 20-3.
An early surge for the All Blacks in the second-half helped them to level the score at 20-20.
The 60th minute try from Kurtley Beale sealed the victory for the hosts Wallabies for the first time in a decade during the history of the Tri-Nations Cup. The Wallabies were quite successful in putting early pressure on the visiting All Blacks
as their time-tested Quade Cooper rushed the pill into the goal in just the third minute of the game.
The All Blacks looked rusty with the handling of passes and gave away an easy chance to the Wallabies to enhance their lead to 8-0 as Will Genia stole the first try of the match. Cooper made the score 10-0 with a well executed conversion shot and left the
opponents chasing their tails. So far no serious threat had been put by the All Blacks despite having immense experience in their line ups.
The All Blacks had to wait until the 23rd minute of the match to open their account in the Tri Nations decider. Dan Carter was the man to heal his side with a penalty goal and made the score 3-10 for his team. Once again the Aussies took control
of the game as Radike Samo discovered the loop holes in the defence of the All Blacks and elevated his side with his first try of the match. Cooper again was flawless with directing the conversion shot.
The Wallabies could smell victory at the end of the first-half as they were miles ahead of the favourite All Blacks with a 20-3 lead in their hands. The All Blacks side left the field with their heads down but made a strong impression after the resumption
of the play after the interval.
Carter ticked the score to 6-20 with a three pointer, centre Conrad Smith snatched a try and Carter again guided the pill to the goals of the Wallabies on the conversion shot. The All Blacks reduced the distance with some sharp work and managed to level
the score with Ma’a Nonu’s try in the 59th minute of the match.
Kurtley Beale’s try in the 60th minute of the match proved to be the difference and the Wallabies displayed a flawless defence in the remaining 20 minutes of the match and walked away with victory.
