Wallabies hammer Eagles by 67-5 in Wellington - Rugby World Cup update
Australia thumped the USA by a monstrous difference of 67-5 to clinch a second victory in the Rugby World Cup 2011 at Wellington on September 23. They scored 11 tries to register a remarkable win in the world showpiece. Adam Ashley-Cooper made a hat-trick
of tries for his team.
The Australian squad was on edge before the match because of a previous upset defeat at the hands of the Irish.
Wallabies coach, Robbie Deans, decided to go with six changes in his side which lost their previous encounter of Rugby World Cup to Ireland. Three Wallabies players, including their skipper James Horwill, David Pocock and James O’Connor, were rested for
minor injuries. Rob Horne was given a starting role almost after one year as he was deployed in the back-lines along with Drew Mitchell.
Meanwhile, US Eagles’ coach, Eddie O'Sullivan, lined a totally new looking combination to face the Wallabies. He made 14 personal and positional changes in the forwards and back bunches despite a victory in their last meeting of RWC against Russia. Six players
were provided the maiden opportunity to make their first appearance in the ongoing event.
The Wallabies had a huge psychological and historical edge over the United States as they won all six matches played so far between the two sides. They Australians looked uncontrollable for the meagre US side and remained successful in putting early pressure
on their rivals. Rob Horne broke the silence for Australia in the eighth minute of the match with a soaring try. Three more tries before the interval by Rocky Elsom, Kurtley Beale and Anthony Faingaa made the Wallabies total 22-5. Quade Cooper struggled with
his kicks and scored just one conversion goal out of three opportunities.
Wallabies excelled in the game with more points in the second-half and made numerous attacks on the US try lines. Drew Mitchell stole the first try of the second-half and later on the flood gates of easy scores opened. Pat McCabe further enhanced his side
with another try after three minutes and then Adam Ashley-Cooper produced a brilliant hat-trick of tries for his team.
On the other hand, the United States seemed unwilling to score at all in the second half. The Wallabies completed their impressive victory with a grand total of 67-5.
