Wallabies slip to third as Ireland and Canada progress in International Rugby Board’s World Rankings
Following their historic win over the Wallabies during the 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC), Ireland has made a two-spot jump on the International Rugby Board’s (IRB) World Rankings.
The latest IRB world rankings were released on Monday, September 19. Ireland’s impressive victory has moved them upward from the 8th position to the 6th. Ireland for now is comfortably placed above their European rivals, Wales and Scotland,
with a total of 82.50 points.
Both Wales and Scotland have dropped a position each in the latest World Rankings and are now placed at 7th and 8th position with 80.73 and 79.12 points respectively.
Ireland ended up defeating the Wallabies 15 – 6 at Eden Park, Auckland on Saturday, September 17. The loss has cost the Aussies their second position on the rankings as they have come down one place. They currently sit on third position with 84.84 points.
The defending champions Springboks have overtaken second place from the Wallabies.
England and France closely follow the wallabies with their 83.99 and 83.78 points respectively.
The Springboks had a hard fought win over Wales and have clinched the second position in the world rankings. South Africa defeated Wales 17 – 16 at Westpac Stadium, Wellington on Sunday, September 11 and are now better placed then the Wallabies at second
position with their 86.71 points
Additionally, Italy, Canada, Fiji, United States of America (USA), Namibia and Portugal have gained position(s) on each table. Italy has moved from the 11th position to the 10th position. Meanwhile, Samoa, Tonga, Romania, and Russia
have dropped on the rankings.
Canada gave an impressive 25 – 20 victory over Tonga and has earned a spot jump from the number 14 position. Canada has moved from the 14th position and is now placed in the 11th position. On the other hand, Tonga has dropped three
positions from the 12th to 15th position.
Out of all 20 teams participating in the 2011 RWC, Russia is the only team, which has dropped from World top 20 rankings. They have fallen two positions and are now ranked at the 21st position.
