Walled City in Thuringia? Near Coburg?

When I was a young man serving in the US military in the 80's we had a border station in Coburg, and we went to visit the border (Cold war, east/west german border). One of the things we saw was a walled city, probably more of a villiage, that was located just across the border in then East Germany. Thinking of visting next year, and was wondering if anyone can remember the name of that villiage, and is any of the old cold war stuff even visible anymore?

  1. Mödlareuth (Moedlareuth).... also known as "Little Berlin"

and yes, there's still plenty to view....

some as part of an open-air museum...

  2. Hi, part of the village Modlareath belongs to the city of Gefell,

The Bavarian part and other community Topen:

Since 1994 Modlareath has an open air museum that borders

between the East and West Germany::::  The Name of the town is  called Little Berlin: It also includes a portion of the original wall which remains a  memorial ::::

  3. You have very few candidates in that immediate area: Herbartswind, Heid and Görsdorf are all small enough for you not to have found them, Eisfeld being the nearest small town (rather than a village) and lying about 5 miles from the border crossing. Görsdorf is RIGHT on the old border, just on the DDR side, Herbartswind and Heid are both about half a mile into Thüringen. Herbartswind is however nearest to the old border crossing at half a mile to the North-West, Heid is about one mile away to the North-East and Görsdorf about two miles to the East of it.

Herbartswind is, for me, the most likely candidate from the information given.

This site is great for anyone wanting to research the inner German border:
