Wallington walk over Wayne Valley and into final of North 1 Boys Volleyball Tournament
Wallington boys volleyball team was able to hand out a defeat to Wayne Valley on Wednesday by securing a 2-0 win. The Panthers have been able to secure themselves a spot in the final of the North 1 Boys Volleyball Tournament that will take place on Friday.
Despite the fact that Wayne Valley lost by a clean sweep, they did not go down without putting up a fight. The first set of the match was very close whereas the second set saw Wayne Valley struggling. The final scores stood at the 25-23 and 25-20 after Wallington was done dismantling their opponents.
Jason Carcich, coach of Wayne Valley, spoke about his team performance at the end of the match and said, "We just made a few too many mistakes [Wednesday], especially at critical junctures in the match. We played well, at times, but we couldn't maintain our rhythm. Wallington played the angles well and came up with all the clutch points when [it] needed them."
The Panthers will be heading into the final supporting a good performance record that shows a total of 20 wins. These victories have been accomplished at the cost of suffering a total of five losses. The third ranking Panthers need all the confidence that they can muster to compete with Fair Lawn in the finals. Fair Lawn is currently ranked in the top position of the tournament. Fair Lawn earned their spot thanks to an impressive record that shows 35 wins bagged at the cost of only two losses.
The first set of the semi-final started off with both the Panthers and Wayne Valley going in for the kill. The two teams were locked in an intense struggle to gain dominance in the match. However, no team could get a significant lead for most part of the game. In the final stages of the opening set, the Panthers had a crucial lead at 24-23 which they were able to capitalise upon. The last point was secured by the Panthers on a serve that got them the first set of the game at 25-23.
With the pressure mounting, the number two ranked Wayne Valley decided to step up their game. However, Wallington still managed to pull off a seven point lead. Wayne Valley did not let the Panthers extend their advantage and were able to equalize in the set. Unfortunately for Wayne Valley, the Panthers did not lose their nerve and went on ahead to seal the deal on the second and final set of the game at 25-20.
The player that stood prominent in the Panthers line up was Konrad Plewa, who was able to post nine well timed kills and 11 digs for his team.
