Wallisch, Turski, Rolland and Logan take home big honours at 2012 Winter Dew Tour
The 2012 Winter Dew Tour brought some of the best freeskiers from around the world to the Snowbasin Resort in Ogden, Utah, this past weekend for the third and final stop, Toyota Championships.
Fans got to witness an exciting contest as the winter sports athletes stretched themselves to get their hands on the event victory as well as the 2012 Winter Dew Tour Cup.
In men’s Ski Slopestyle Finals that went down on Sunday, American Nick Goepper put on a superb performance in his second run to prevail over his fellow countrymen Tom Wallisch and Bobby Brown.
The 17-year-old Goepper failed to make much of an impact during his first run, but entered the course for his second run to pull off a 450 on 270 out on the down rail, front swap back-side 450 out on A-frame, switch 270 on back-side rodeo 450 out on the
cannon box, switch left side double cork 1080 on the first jump and a switch right side double cork 1440 on the final jump. Owing mostly to the last trick in his run, the Indiana-based rider earned a score of 91.00 to take the win.
Despite losing the highest spot on the podium to Goepper and finishing in second place with a 92.25 off his best run, Wallisch was still celebrating more than the event winner. His back-to-back wins in the first and second stop of the Winter Dew Tour, followed
by a second-place finish at Utah earned him the 2012 men’s slopestyle Dew Cup. He also earned the Toyota Rider of the Year for finishing with the highest total points for all three events in the current tour.
Bobby Brown finished in third place after scoring a 91.00 off his top run, consequently making it an all-American sweep of the podium.
In the women’s field, 2012 Winter X Games gold medallist Kaya Turski stole the show with her exquisite performance to not only win the event but also secure the women’s ski slopestyle Dew Cup.
The 23-year-old Montreal-based skier had raised the bar quite high after getting down with her first run, scoring a 92.75 off it. None of her rivals were able to out-score her in both their runs, consequently making Turski’s second run a victory lap. Instead
of taking it easy in Run 2, she decided to step it up even further and landed a switch 270 to gap blind switch up to down, blind switch up on A-Frame, blind 450 out of cannon box, switch 720 high mute and switch 540 Japan on the final 70-foot jump. The effort
improved her score to 93.75 points to seal the fate of the contest in her favour.
Australian Anna Segal took second place with her best-run score of 90.75, while the defending Winter Dew Tour champion Devin Logan of America completed the podium after finishing in third place with an 89.00.
On Friday, the best ski halfpipe riders were in attendance at the Snowbasin Resort to show off their stuff in the 615-foot-long superpipe.
In the men’s field, the 2012 Winter X Games champion David Wise of America landed a solid first run to score a 94.5 off it. The run, which comprised of a switch double cork 1080, right side 900, left side 900, alley-oop flat spin 540 tail grab and a double
cork 1260, remained unbeatable until the end to make him triumphant in the Final.
However, it was Kevin Rolland of France who took home the 2012 ski superpipe Dew Tour Cup despite finishing in second place on Friday. The 22-year-old La Plagne-based skier scored a 93.00 off his best run to finish behind Wise, but that still did not keep
him from walking away with his second consecutive Winter Dew Cup.
The third spot on the podium was filled by America’s 16-year-old Torin Yater-Wallace, whose best run earned him a 92.25 to put him in third place.
In the women’s field, the top female skiers were aiming for not only the podium but also the boasting honours for clinching the inaugural women’s freeski Dew Cup.
After an exciting six-person Final that went down under lights on Friday, it was the 18-year-old Logan who emerged triumphant. She stole the show with a run that featured a Japan grab, 540 tail-grab flare, mute grab to alley oop critical, 720 mute and a
switch alley oop 540. Earning a 90.00 for the run, she secured the highest place on the podium as well as the first-ever women’s freeski Dew Cup.
Finishing in second place was the Winter X Games gold medallist Roz Groenewoud of Canada who scored an 82.50 off her top run. During her post-Final interview, she once again dedicated her podium-finish to late Sarah Burke who died earlier this year.
The 18-year-old Maddie Bowman of America scored an 80.00 off her best run to complete the podium.
The latest edition of Winter Dew Tour once again turned out to be an exciting affair, with the most exciting winter sports athletes delivering exactly what the fans expected of them. While the competition may have come to an end, the freeskiers will not
stay out of spotlight for too long as Winter X Games Europe 2012 in France is just around the corner.
