  1. The proper way is to "score" the wallpaper with a scoring tool...its basically a palm sized tool that has rolling teeth on the bottom that puncture the paper....then, spray the wallpaper with steaming hot water or a wall iron that soaks into the paper through the holes....wait approx 5 minutes for the paper to soak up the water and then use an angled wall scraper to remove the paper.

It's a pretty messy process, but once the wall dries it should be in decent condition. The only real problem is if you realize that there is damage to the wall underneath where the paper has been.

Painting will probably need to be done since the backing of the wallpaper sometimes leaves a brownish yellow stain. You'll want to "prime" before you paint.

  2. use a nice sharp 3 or 4 inch putty knife to physically remove the outer layer of wall paper. then use a spray bottle of water to moisten and soften the 2nd layer and use the putty knife again. there are wallpaper glue removers you can buy to add to your water. (cheap right?) the scoring tool will damage the sheetrock paper and repairs will have to be made before painting. invest in the glue remover for the second step, without it the labor is just too much. no fun. and yes I would repaint the entire wall. just me.

  3. Rent a wallpaper steamer. Most rental places rent them for 30-40 dollars a day and they are worth every penny. It will steam off the border in half the time that any other method will.

  4. You will need a wall steamer and if you get or rent a good one it is not that messy. Just start at a seam or corner and steam it until you can begin pulling it off. steam the detached part as you pull it off. As far as do you need to paint, that will be determined when you get the paper off. Sometimes you can clean the wall behind the wall paper, other times you may need or want to paint.
