  1. Depends on the colors.  Are you going from light to very dark, or vice versa?  If so, then prime first.  Light to dark, you can have the primer tinted to help with the coverage of the finish coat.  If you are not changing the color too much, you can just paint.  A second coat will probably be necessary.  Good luck.


  2. If the color is similar, you will not need to prime.

    If you are painting over a really different color, especially light over dark paint, you will need to prime. Killz or Killz 2 are reasonable primers.

    Usually you can have the paint store tint the primer to a similar color as the paint you are using. This will reduce the number of coats of paint needed.

    BTW, if you are painting a dark color, such as crimsom, the primer may only be tinted to pink, but it still helps with coverage.

  3. It really depends on the color you want to paint.  If you're going over dark paint with a lighter color, you will need to prime.  If you do end up priming, make sure you use an oil base primer too.
