Walmart NW Arkansas Championship 2012: Shanshan Feng happy after taking second spot in the opening round
Chinese Shanshan Feng was more than thrilled after she grabbed the second spot in the opening round of the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship 2012 to grab an early lead.
Feng rose to fame after she grabbed her first major title at the LPGA Championship 2012 a few days ago, and now posting a stunning score at the start of the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship 2012 has definitely
boosted her confidence.
The Chinese star got off to a sensible start, as she drained her first birdie on the first hole. She then parred the second hole and shot another birdie on the next hole to further consolidate her position
on the leaderboard.
Although the roster is featuring plenty of experienced players, Feng’s performance was unmatched. However, she could not beat Veronica Felibert of Venezuela who grabbed a lead after posting a 65.
Speaking to the media at the end of the round, Feng said that she is pretty happy after outplaying most of the big names in the roster. She pointed out that she was confident, but was a bit sceptical about
her abilities.
When asked how hard it was to post a good score, the Chinese prodigy said that she just played a natural game, which worked and she managed to grab the second position on the leaderboard.
She pointed out that she faced trouble making calculated putts on some holes, which kept her from beating Felibert.
Feng may not be as strong a contender as the defending champion Yani Tseng or the current world number two Stacy Lewis, but she has the capability and courage to put up a tough fight.
She struck fear into her rivals when she racked up her first major title at the LPGA Championship 2012.
Analysts said that the rising star is going places these days, as her performance has become far better since her triumph at the LPGA Championship. Feng is now the first Chinese golfer to win a major tournament
— a feat that has helped her eclipse the popularity of most of her competitors.
Tseng, who was expected to perform well in the opening round, struggled to prove her worth and posted an unimpressive 73 to tie for the 76th position.
