Question:

Walmart Optical -- Problems?

I purchased my glasses in Dec. 06. The frame hinge broke less that a year later. My frames were replaced - however when the lenses were placed in the new frame, one of them started to crack (hairline). The crack then grew rapidly; my 1 year warranty expired; and WalMart REFUSES to replace the lens!

I need some advice on what to do now!!!

  1. You get what you pay for.  Go spend some money on a quality pair of glasses from a private doctor who stands behind what he sells.

  2. That is why you shouldn't get glasses from WalMart. They suck. How long did you wait to mention the crack after you noticed it? It was probably there when they replaced the frame, but I suppose if the local store won't fix it you are stuck. Perhaps you can contact walmart corporate to see if they will give you any consideration. Did you get polycarbonate lenses? They are compression molded, so  there is a constant stress on the lens. If the replacement frame was just a little off size and the lens was too tight in the new frame it could have contributed to this crack.

  3. Um, if your lenses are that old then I understand why walmart won't replace the lenses.  I'm an optician and have been in the business for several years (currently the lead optician where I work) and can honestly tell you that walmart does not sell c**p.  It's not going to be the same quality as a high end luxotica frame or something like that, but they sell decent stuff.  c**p, they sell certain things that I wish we could get our hands on at where I work. (Such as freeform progressive lenses)

To know more about what's going on, I'd need to know more about what exactly is going on with your lenses and how old they are.  However, from what you've said thus far, I can see why they aren't replacing your lenses.  You should have brought your lenses back right after they started cracking.

That being said, when dealing with walmart, remember "the squeaky wheel gets the oil."  Raise enough h**l and you'll probably get what you want.  Not that I support that move, but it's what usually happens.
