Our neighbor has a large, mature Walnut Tree and every year it produces a TON of walnuts. Our dogs just love to crack them open and eat the nuts. Cleaning our backyard a couple of months ago, my husband found a walnut that had cracked open and a small branch was growing out of the shell/nut. As a joke to me, he planted it in a basic clay pot with the branch sticking out. We watered it every day just to see what would happen. It grew a couple inches then appeared to dry out and die. Then, out of nowhere we saw green leaf sprouts growing along the 'branch' and now it is about 6 inches high, covered in small versions of the leaves that are on the mature tree.
Is it possible that this open nut with the branch sticking out could be transforming into a tree? If so, should we find a spot to plant it in-ground to see if it will ever mature in the coming years? My husband is quite proud of this branch and would love to see it grow.
Thank you for any advice.
