Walsh brothers all win at York Hall
The three Walsh brothers’, Liam, Ryan and Michael continued their undefeated starts to their boxing careers with a clean sweep of wins on Saturday night at York Hall. It was a night that also saw Liam pick up the brothers’ first title.
Liam clinched the super-featherweight commonwealth belt with a hard fought unanimous decision victory over Maxwell Awuku. It was a tough for Walsh who has only had nine pro fights up until this point, with Awuku much more experienced having competed in over 20 bouts.
Walsh’s risk nearly didn’t come off as the more experienced man frequently rocked him with some powerful shots most notably a big hook in the second which left him with a bloodied nose.
However Walsh’s slick style proved too much for the Ghanaian in the end and he managed to rally to pick up a comprehensive points decision with a classy display.
Super-bantamweight and twin brother Ryan also had to come through a very stern test when he fought Scotland’s James Ancliff who like Awuku boasts decent experience and would prove a step up in class for Walsh.
It was nearly over quickly as Walsh came storming out the blocks looking for a quick victory with some blistering shots. Somehow Ancliff hung in there and started a strong resilience that saw him put himself back into contention in the middle rounds. Yet powerful combinations from Walsh saw him reassert himself and he almost got the KO in the later rounds, but had to settle for 80-73 on the card.
Oldest brother bantamweight Michael had got the ball rolling earlier in the evening with a compressive victory in which he took just two minutes and 14 seconds to dispatch Ian Bailey. It was a vicious uppercut by Walsh that dropped the fighter who had taken brother Ryan the distance back in February.
This win keeps up Michael’s record of a 100% knockout rate with eight from eight and he too will be looking to challenge for a belt soon.
