Walter Dix and Carmelita Jeter emerge on second day of USA Championships – Athletics news
As the second day of the four-day USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships concluded at the Hayward Field in Eugene, Walter Dix and Carmelita Jeter grabbed the limelight with their wonderful performances in their respective events.
Winning the title in the event will decide upon the fate of American athletes who will have the privilege of taking part at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics to be held in Daegu. Dix, the seventh fastest runner for the 200m run with a personal best
of 19.69 seconds, clocked 9.94 seconds for dominating the men’s competition. His runner-up, Justin Gatlin, the 29-year-old American sprinter and Olympic gold medallist with a 100m PB of 9.85 seconds, finished the race in 9.95 seconds.
On the women side, Jeter, whose early career had been marred by a hamstring injury and who could only emerge to grab some limelight at the 2007 World Championships Athletics, outdid her close rival, Marshevet Myers, for clocking 10.74 seconds. Myers, the
runner-up of the race crossed the finishing line in 10.83 seconds.
Surprisingly, the pre-favourite of the men’s event comprised of Tyson g*y, who had been suffering from a hip injury for long. He just could not warm-up enough before the contest and resultantly had to fall back. Revealing details of the below-the-mark performance
by the veteran, Mark Wetmore, his manager said, “He was unable to warm up due to a hip and adductor problem on his right side. As Tyson has mentioned, it has been bothering him for several months.”
Jeter, who had marked her dominance at the Prefontaine Classic event on this very track about three weeks ago, while expressing her delight on winning said, “I feel like I executed a great race. I feel like I hit the back block like I was supposed to. I
did everything that my coach wanted me to. I want to stay healthy. That’s the No.1 plan and to not think too much.”
The primary reason that contributed towards her win according to her, was that instead of dwelling upon others, she just concentrated on her own game and the efforts had indeed paid dividends.
