Walter Dix bags a stunning win at the Spitzenleichtathletik meeting – Athletics news
As the Spitzenleichtathletik meeting kicked-off at the Allmend Stadium, Luzern, Switzerland, it was Walter Dix, the Olympic bronze medallist of 100m and 200m, who marked his dominance over the latter run for marking an emphatic 20.02 seconds finish.
For displaying the splendid performance, Dix not only won the title, but he also carved a new meet record. The previous track record of 20.18 seconds was clocked by his countryman, Wallace Spearmon.
Dix, the 25-year-old American in this very meeting last year, had finished second in the shorter distance sprint for hitting the finishing line under ten seconds. In response to the 9.86 seconds marked by Nesta Carter, the winner of the run, he had witnessed
a 9.88 seconds finish to secure a runner-up position on the podium. Commenting upon his victory this year, Dix, who is planning to emerge in the upcoming London 200m event, said, “The track is very fast. It was not very cold for me as I kept myself warm before
the race. The crowd was magnificent.”
Dix, who for clocking an over-awed 19.69 seconds, is regarded as the seventh fastest sprinter for a two hundred metre run. He has been a successful amateur athlete as at the age of eighteen, Dix made his first major entrance in the US Olympic team. Later
on, he kept on displaying his acumen for the game even while studying in the Florida State University, where he also made a new American junior record.
Besides Dix, other performers who succeeded in bagging a title was Olympian from Norway, Andreas Thorkildsen, who also happens to be a European and world Olympian. The javelin star’s throw landed at 84.12m, which was big enough to place him on the top of
the podium.
While sharing his thoughts over the win, Thorkildsen said, “I would have liked to throw further but the technique was shaky today. I enjoyed the lovely atmosphere of this meeting. After the injury I felt that I needed one more competition before Birmingham
and Stockholm. Scoring as many points for the Diamond Race is my big goal together with the world title defence in Daegu.” He said that he was content for appearing and winning at Lucerne, where he also loved the see the landscapes of the city.
