The Partenopei boss will see his team’s two-legged last 16 round from the stands; Napoli confirm appeal against the ban
Napoli manager, Walter Mazzarri, has been handed a two-match touchline ban by UEFA for his sending-off in the Champions League group stage game against Villarreal.
The Partenopei tactician was sent-off after his protests against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nilmar-c28044 for wasting time during the last group stage game of the competition. The ban means that the former Sampdoria boss will watch his team’s both legs of the last
16 round from the stands. Mazzarri has also been told to pay a €3000 fine.
However, the club have decided to present an appeal to the European governing body for the upliftment of the ban. The lawyer of the club has confirmed that they will appeal against the ban in the coming week.
Lawyer, Mattia Grassani, believes that the two-match ban is too harsh, and UEFA must show some leniency. He insisted that they will try to get the ban reduced to one game, as Mazzarri did not commit a serious offence.
He further insisted that the manager was not aggressive with his behaviour, and it was the Villarreal player who came towards him.
While talking to the reporters, Mattia Grassani insisted,
“We will present an appeal at the start of next week. We’re hoping to at least reduce it to a one-match ban, seeing as there were no repercussions for the player pushed.”
“Our objective is to cut that down to only a warning. We’ll try to prove Mazzarri’s behaviour was not aggressive. Above all, it was the player who moved towards the Coach and not the other way round.”
Mazzarri revealed after the match that he got intentionally sent-off to spur his team to boost their game. At the time of the sending-off, the two teams were locked at 0-0, but the Azzurri made a strong comeback to register a win
and advance to the next round of the competition.
