The Partenopei boss frustrated after the draw against Siena, and not expecting a top three finish for his side
After yet another draw in the Serie A, Napoli manager, Walter Mazzarri, has warned the fans not to expect the heroics of the last season.
Napoli were held to a 1-1 stalemate by Siena at Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday, January 22, 2012. The Azzurri have picked up eight draws in the league, and find themselves 12 points behind leaders, Juventus.
The Partenopei side finished third in the league last season, and managed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. They have been in superb form in Europe this season, but have witnessed a downward slide in their Serie A form.
Mazzarri has urged the fans to keep their expectations low, as he feels that the players have failed to manage the pressure. The former Sampdoria manager believes that his side is below others among the wage bills and budget, so
he cannot expect them to remain in the top two all the time.
While talking to the reporters, Mazzarri said,
“We did exceptional things and perhaps last season can never be repeated. This year we feel more pressure after that splendid campaign and probably some of our players can’t handle it as well. If Napoli are in seventh place in
terms of budget and wage bill, then we cannot expect to be in the top two all the time. Last season was a stand-out moment.”
The 50-year-old is ruing the missed chances against Siena, and believes that these little mistakes cost a lot later in the season. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Edinson-Cavani-c11955 missed a penalty later in the game, which stopped his side from bagging all three
points.
“It was a clear scoring opportunity and recently we are missing those too easily. You can see we have to shoulder some of the blame, as these little incidents can often decide if a season goes well or badly.”
