51-year-old Napoli's manager, Walter Mazzarri, has announced that he will no longer be at the club from the next season onwards, as he looks to take a new challenge
The Italian has inspired the Naples club to a second-place finish this season in the Italian league. The team finished behind champions Juventus and missed out on the title once again, ending the season with a total of 78 points.
The former Sampdoria boss made the announcement after Napoli’s final game of the league season against AS http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roma-c31603. They lost the game 1-2 but have secured a place in next year’s UEFA Champions League.
Mazzarri claimed that he did not make the announcement during the course of the season as that would have de-motivated his team. He added that there would have been a backlash which would have affected the team.
“From next year onwards I will no longer be the coach of Napoli, I did not say anything before because there would've been a backlash which could have had a devastating effect on the team and the city. I must thank the president and [sporting director Riccardo] Bigon for trying to change my mind, but I made this decision because I needed a new challenge,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
The tactician thanked the club’s president and sporting director for all the support in the last three years and also hailed the supporters.
Mazzarri claimed that he has not made any decision on which the club he will join next season. The manager stated that he will monitor the situation in the next few days and if he gets a good option, he will certainly take it.
“My next team? Until now I have not considered anyone in particular, but tomorrow [on Monday] I'll have a look around,” the former Livorno boss concluded.
