Walthamstow Stadium update: Bob Morton makes formal bid
It has been claimed by the Save Our Stow group that a formal bid has been submitted by millionaire businessman, Bob Morton, for a potential takeover of the Walthamstow site.
The iconic site was purchased from the Chandler family by London and Quadrant for development almost two years ago, and, after constant failure in gaining planning permission, things haven’t quite worked out for them as hoped.
Last week the owners took the defiant route of appointing new architects after claiming no viable offer had been submitted.
Leader of the Save Our Stow campaign, Ricky Holloway, announced the bid yesterday and although declining to cite a figure, said: "The proposal represents a golden opportunity to change this borough for the better for generations to come. We urge London and Quadrant to listen to the Mayor, the local Members of Parliament and the residents of the borough and work with Mr Morton."
"The new stadium will encompass the best traditions and practices of the famous Stow but it will be vastly improved, making it a top class leisure arena.
"Mr Morton’s plans involve a state-of-the-art leisure arena with residential accommodation at the southern boundary of the site, which will include affordable housing."
Morton is expected to meet with L&Q once again this week to discuss the plans.
