Question:

Walther p22 jamming question

During shooting the gun will jam every few shots or so, I pull the reciever back and the shell falls correctly in the breech. During rapid fire this poses a serious issue when time and accuracy is conserned.

  1. Try smoothing out the feed ramp with a light application of fine steel wool, and clean out the bolt face and extractor and ejector with Hoppe's #9.  Sometimes a thorough cleaning like that will fix the problem.  Beyond that, you may need to take it to a gunsmith.

  2. I own a P22, your biggest problem is your ammo, Walthers suggest CCI Minimags. I had the same problem with mine, I've tried every type of .22 ammo I could find, the only one to consistantly feed correctly is CCI's. If your good with guns or are willing to take it to a gunsmith, get the feed ramp rounded off a little, the ramp in the P22 has a relly sharp angle, so until you do this, hollow points and pretty much anything else besides the CCI's will jam. Once you get the little kinks worked out its a great little gun. Good luck

  3. As a general rule, jams are caused by either:

1 - The gun is dirty, clean it

2 - The magazine is dirty -- clean it

3 - The magazine is damaged, replace it

4 - Your pistol doesn't like the ammo you are feeding it, change ammo.

First thing I'd do would be to detail strip the gun and magazines, give it a thorough cleaning, lightly lubricated moving parts and reassemble.  I would pay especial attention to the magazine during the cleaning to ensure the feed lips have not been damaged.

If it still jams, try several different brands and types of ammo to see if that makes a difference.

If you have more than one magazine, mark them so you can know if the jamming occurs with just one magazine or with all of your magazines.  If it is just one magazine, replace it and be happy.

If cleaning the gun and changing ammo does not remedy the problem, I'd say you need to have a gunsmith examine your pistol.

    Good Luck and Good Shooting,

    Doc

  4. Have you tried several different brands of ammo yet?  Usually .22's can be picky about what they like.  Most of my rifles like Remington Golden bullet, but my pistols like either CCI mini-mags or Federal.

If you have tried several and still have the same problem, give your pistol a good cleaning and oiling and try again.  It could be that fouling or lack of oil is causing a some binding or extra resistence.

Also, if your gun is new, it may need to break in a little.  Some failures like this is normal until they get some rounds through them.  If you are still having problems after 500 rounds or so, then it may be time to polish the feed ramp a little.

  5. 1....Change the ammo.    Try round nose.   If it still jams after you try a different ammo you know it is not the ammo..  If it works OK,  you know it is the ammo.

#2.  Are you shooting with two hands?   Even the little 22 can give enough recoil that if you do not keep your wrist firm the recoil can kick the gun up and change the geometry of the action,  causing a jam.  If you have been shooting one hand,  try two and see if that solves the problem.

#3.  The gun comes with two magazines.  Does it jam with both of them?  If only jams with one,  then you got a bad magazine.  Replace it.  If it jams with both, you know it is not the magazine.

#4.  Is the gun kept clean?   Do you really know how to clean a gun?  If you are not getting it entirely clean it could simply be gummed up.  I clean my guns after every shooting event,  even if I only fired a few shots through it...

#5....If it is not your handling,  not the ammo,  not the magazines,  not dirt,  then it is the gun itself.   Bummer.   Field strip it and look for any cracks,  bends,  or damage to the slide and frame.   Also look at the barrel.   I believe it has two recoil springs.   Take them out and compare them. If they are not the same length that could be the problem.  Try switching the springs left to right.   Put it all back together and try it again..

#6...If it still jams then you need a gun smith.   I highly recommend against trying to file, sand, smooth or otherwise "fix" a gun.  Guns today are finely made machines and if simple things like above do not fix it,  then you need a gun smith who knows now not to s***w it up and make it dangerous!!

    Hope this helps..

  6. Try a different magazine. If the magazine lips are warped you will get a hung cartridge that will not chamber.

  7. My buddy uses CCI high velocity mini-mags for his Sig Mosquito. Nothing else seems to work properly in it but them. Give them a look see.

Since he has been using them, we have had no issues.
