Wandy Rodriguez shines as Houston Astros defeat New York Mets 6-1 – MLB Update
Wandy Rodriguez virtually rendered the New York Mets’ offence powerless to allow Houston Astros a 6-1 win at Citi Field, New York on Tuesday, April 19.
Houston’s starter was unplayable from the start to not only regain his seemingly lost form but also pitched sharp innings in the team’s victory. "I had excellent location tonight. Everything was good," Rodriguez said. "I want to stay consistent, throw a
lot of quality starts."
As Houston’s defence saw their strength in Rodriguez, the offence was strengthened by Michael Bourn and Carlos Lee who charged the Mets pitchers relentlessly.
Houston started the game aggressively when Jonathon Niese came out to pitch for New York. Niese gave up two hits when his fastball with weak velocity was turned into account by Carlos Lee, as he singled to centre, where Michael Bourn scored making it a 1-0
lead in the very first inning.
Rodriguez got a boost from the team’s start. He pitched balls with increasingly fast pace after the rain descended upon Citi Field. He maintained the defensive lead with tenacity. Houston’s offence went on forcefully, as J.R Towles took to task Niese once
again. Towels doubled to left centre where Brett Wallace scored, taking the lead to 2-0 for Houston.
Lee made it 3-0 for Houston in the seventh when Pedro Beato came out to pitch for New York. Carlos Beltran scored the first run for the Mets in the seventh inning when he homered to left centre on Rodriguez’s fastball. It was a 3-1 lead for Houston at the
end of the seventh inning.
However, no sooner had the Mets opened their account that Houston hit back with more force, as they tacked on three runs in the eighth inning in the face of a struggling Mets’ bull-pen. It was Bobby Parnell who allowed a two-run single to Sanchez. Ryota
Igarashi gave up four hits in the eighth inning and the team bull-pen a precious three runs for Houston, taking the lead to 6-1.
When New York came in the ninth inning to face Jeff Fulchino, it was unlikely they could do wonders given the fact that they had failed to do it in eight innings. Fulchino reduced the Mets’ batters to no score, securing the Astros a dominating 6-1 win.
