Wandy Rodriguez shines as Houston Astros humiliate San Francisco Giants 6-0 - MLB Update
Houston Astros’ starting pitcher, Wandy Rodriguez was remarkable with his pitching as he permitted just five hits in eight shut-out innings and gave Astros a 6-0 victory against the San Francisco Giants at Minute Maid Park, Houston on August 19.
The batters failed to open their scoring accounts during first two innings of the game. At the top of first inning, Giants’ centre-fielder Aaron Rowand flied out, Mark DeRosa grounded out to short-stop position and Cody Ross popped out to second base without
contributing even a single run.
On the other side, Astros’ second baseman, Anibal Sanchez and J.D. Martinez both were grounded out to short-stop to end the score-less first inning. Chris Stewart walked during second inning but at centre-field, Miguel Tejada flied out and Aubrey Huff was
thrown out at home plate.
In the third inning, Astros got off the mark by posting two runs to their score-card and got a 2-0 lead. Clint Barmes and Carlos Corporan both scored two consecutive runs for Astros when J.B. Shuck drove a double-run shot to deep right-field. The pitchers
raised their team’s potential during fourth and fifth innings also by throwing accurately.
Rodriguez pitched his respective innings with an ERA of 3.31 and struck-out eight batters. He surrendered just two walks on his 109 pitches. Speaking to reporters, Rodriguez said, “I tried to locate my fastball early in the game and late I used my breaking
ball.”
Astros’ manager, Brad Mills said, “Wandy was absolutely outstanding. He just threw the ball real well. It's nice to see him be able to use all of his pitches and he was able to keep them off balance, obviously, all night, which was good.”
Astros’ batters stepped on the gas during the sixth inning by scoring three runs and took a 5-0 lead. Corporan singled to right-field and Brian Bogusevic scored one run for Astros. Then, Corporan moved to second base on the error of Giants’ right-fielder,
Nate Schierholtz. The second and third runs during sixth inning were taken by Barmes and Corporan when Rodriguez drove a single-run shot towards right-field.
The batters got out in seventh inning and did not score runs. At the bottom of eighth inning, Bogusevic hit a one-run homer (403 feet) towards right-centre to advance the Astros lead 6-0. However, Astros led off the three-game series 1-0 after having a stunning
victory.
