Wang Shixian beats Juliane Schenk in quarter-final of the Singapore Open Super Series
China’s Wang Shixian, who is the World Number One in the Women’s Singles rankings, defeated Germany’s Juliane Schenk in an epic three-set quarter-final fight of the Singapore Open Super Series 2011. The match was held in Singapore City, on Friday, June 17,
2011.
In the opening game of the match, the German played with courage against the top seed by keeping her pace at the maximum level. She had all the answers to the superb strokes of the Chinese and made Shixian work really hard for every point.
Schenk was leading the game with notable ease, as she found gaps in her opponent’s court and placed powerful smashes on the right areas. She won the first set by a margin of 21-17, in 22 minutes.
Stung with the loss of the opening game, Shixian played tremendous badminton and kept the pace of the game at the highest level in the second set. She reached at 8-2 in a flash by becoming quicker in all corners of the court. At the interval, Shixian was
ahead at 11-5.
After the break, Schenk stunned everyone by playing an incredible game, as she recovered from a five-point deficit and reached at 15-13, by scoring nine consecutive points. Shixian then started to play fast rallies, which worked well and she also scored
eight consecutive points to finish the game in a surprising manner, by a 21-15 margin in 26 minutes.
The German was quite helpless in the concluding part of the game, where her rival controlled the pace and spared no chance for Schenk to win the match.
The final set of this nail-biting match was the best fight of the day, as both ladies demonstrated high-class badminton. The German proved that she has achieved a certain level of expertise and can put up a good show against Chinese shuttlers.
The score in the third set was 20-20, when the top seed Chinese managed to win the game by scoring two consecutive points. Shixian ousted the German with a 22-20 margin, in 36 minutes. The 84-minute fight ended with a 17-21, 21-15 and 22-20 score on the
board.
In the semi-final of the event, Shixian will face Denmark’s Tine Baun, who got rid of Shao Chieh Cheng of Chinese Taipei in the quarter-final of the tournament.
