Wang Shixian defeats Wang Xin to reach in the final of the All England Open Badminton Championship
China’s Wang Shixian defeated team-mate Wang Xin in the women’s singles semi-final match in the All England Open Badminton Championship 2011, on Saturday, March 12. The number one seed of the event, Shixian took 40 minutes to beat the compatriot and third
seed, Xin, who defeated the sixth seed Chinese shuttler, Yanjiao Jiang, in the quarterfinal of the event. In the final battle, Shixian will meet either Petya Nedelcheva of Bulgaria or Eriko Hirose of Japan.
Shixian, who has already won two major events in the opening month of 2011, is just one step away to win the third crown. Both shuttlers played quite well from the start to the ending moments of the opening set. The score remained tight from both sides till
9-9. The top seed scored two consecutive points to take a two-point lead at 11-9 till the break.
After the one-minute break, both ladies again progressed with the same pace. Both players were playing top standard badminton that entertained the huge crowd of the National Indoor Arena. When the score reached at 18-18, Shixian demonstrated a clever performance
and scored the remaining points to grab the first set by consuming 21 minutes in the court, with a narrow margin of 21-19.
The second game was also enticing for the crowd as both team-mates were working hard to dominate the game. Shixian was ahead of the opponent at 11-8 till the 60-second-break. Xin accelerated the pace of the game to reduce the gap and drew near at 13-14,
where Shixian again occupied the driving seat and again, stretched the lead by scoring four consecutive points in a row and reached at 18-13.
The number one seed maintained the lead and spared no chance for her team-mate to fight back in the game. Xin completely failed to handle the powerful smashes and tumbling net strokes of her opponent. Shixian won the second set in 19 minutes with a 21-17
score on the board. The concluding score of this semi-final battle was 21-19 and 21-17. The final match will be played tomorrow on March 13.
