Wang Shixian loses to Cheng Shao Chieh in Women’s Singles quarter-final of 2011 World Championships
China’s Women’s Singles top shuttler, Wang Shixian suffered with a surprising defeat from the hands of Cheng Shao Chieh of Chinese Taipei in the quarter-final match of the 2011 World Championships, at the Wembley Arena in London, on Friday, August 12.
Shixian, who is the World Number One in the Women’s Singles world rankings, could not play well against the lower ranked Shao Chieh, who was playing surprising badminton. The Chinese lost the quarter-final battle in straight games with the margin of 16-21
and 17-21.
In the first set, both ladies played to their full potential by keeping the pace of the game quite high. The Taipei shuttler utilised every opportunity of hitting smash, whereas, Shixian was relying on drives and semi-smashes.
Shao Chieh geared up her speed in the second game and remained successful in playing positive badminton. The Chinese made many errors in the concluding half of the opening game and lost the set with a margin of 16-21.
In the second game, Shixian changed her tactics to deal with the aggression of her challenger but failed to create gap as Shao Chieh was moving in the court without any problem. The Chinese lost her focus in the second-half of the set as she executed wrong
strokes and threw away many points.
The negative play of the Chinese helped Shao Chieh to build a good lead in the ending phase of the second game. Shixian lost the second set to her spirited rival with the difference of 17-21. The top seed lost the quarter-final match in two games by the
score of 16-21 and 17-21.
After the match, Shixian said, “I just couldn't play my own game while facing her. But I felt I played better than last time. I hope I could take the victory when we meet again.”
On the other hand, Shao Chieh was very happy with her win against the top seed. She said, “I did that once when I was young, I'm old now. I have never thought about the result, I'm just relaxed and enjoy badminton.”
Shao Chieh will take on Germany’s Juliane Schenk sin the Women’s Singles quarter-final which will be played later today.
