Wang Zhengming beats Suppanyu Avihingsanon in the round-of-16 of the Badminton Asia Championships
China’s Wang Zhengming has booked his place in the Men’s Singles quarter-final by beating Suppanyu Avihingsanon of Thailand in the round-of-16 in the Badminton Asia Championships 2011 at Chengdu, China on April 21.
The eighth seed, Zhengming had to work hard in a three-set match against Suppanyu, who defeated Chanthan Mao of Cambodia in the second round in straight sets.
Zhengming played an impressive game in the first set against the un-seeded Suppanyu. He took a 5-point lead in the first half of the set by reaching at 11-6. After the one-minute interval, the Chinese player continued his progressive run and won the opening
set with a good margin of 21-14, in just 15 minutes.
Suppanyu bounced back in the second set by playing an aggressive game. He accelerated his speed at the net and executed perfect net shots that earned him a 3-point lead of 11-8 in the opening half of the set. After the break, Suppanyu remained focused in
the game and managed to win the set in 16 minutes with a decent margin of 21-18.
The deciding set was a wonderful fight as both shuttlers progressed with the equal pace and reached 6-6 where the Chinese shuttler scored four points in a row by playing a positive game to make it a 10-6 lead. At the end of the first half of the final game,
Zhengming was leading the game with a 4-point lead of 11-7.
After the 60-second break, Suppanyu who played tremendous badminton in the second round became a little slow, that spared an opportunity for the Chinese shuttler to dominate the game. Zhengming was leading by 17-10, where the Thai player found some momentum
by gearing up his speed. He played a flawless game and levelled the score by reaching 19-19. However, it was the Wang who scored the two consecutive points to win the final set with a tight margin of 21-19.
In the quarter-final of the championship, Zhengming will fight against either the compatriot and second seed Chen Long or the ninth seed Hu Yun of Hong Kong.
